SBXIV 28: Tricked Into The Jumping Discussion

We thought there wouldn’t be much to talk about today but boy were we wrong. Orophen is hosting today, joined by Frei and Yelta. Rubicon’s a bit under the weather and can’t come out into the sunlight, and we thought Calaera wouldn’t show up, but like the assassin that she is, she drops in on us right in the middle of the episode. Here’s the rundown of what we talked about this episode.

Wanted to point out that there is jumping in XIII-2 and it is implemented in a platform way… kinda. There is obviously the end stages in Academia, and some things you have to jump for if you want it. Or to reach certain areas if you wish to revisit if you can’t find certain switches… but its not particularly battle related. Unless you try to jump off a ledge to escape a enemy?

It’s funny hearing you old ass people refusing to add a feature that you wouldn’t need to use. The game sucks and it’s trying to reinstate itself in the MMO market. You think jumping is going to make it worse? Probably not. And Calaera saying that adding jump is going to make it the same as every other mmo is completely stupid. It’s the content. Goddamn this podcast is fucking awful.

  Sounds great. Thanks for listening to the show. I’m assuming you’re a first time listener? I’m also assuming you’re a young guy, considering you have a gripe about some of us being older. Unless you’re younger than 20 though, you’ve got no business breaking out the age hate. If you’re younger than 20, well then you’re not even a real boy yet.
  
  Yeah the game sucks and it’s trying to reinstate itself into the older market. But if you’re going to sit there and defend a jump feature as if it’s going to be the revolution that turns the game around, you’ve got a brain disease. So, even if we hated jump in any game, who gives a fuck?
  
  As far as jump goes, we’re entitled to our opinions. Most of us said jump is fine as long as it’s getting past obstacles and wasn’t a battle feature. None of us actually meant that jump was the bane of all MMOs in the world, despite any hyperbole or attitude we might have used for the sake of the show. If you’re going to get that bent out of shape about it, I’m glad you hate our show. Hate it more. Never listen again. Tell your friends, because they suck for knowing you, and we don’t want them to listen either. Later.

    After listening to all your sides I am in agreement. Jump is fine for terrain but using it for battle is too much. I like how Yelta said it best. I wanna play a final fantasy game, not some action platformer. Thanks for another enjoyable show :3

  I don’t think you really heard what we were saying. I don’t think any of us are 100% anti jump. I didn’t hear anyone saying we need our feet to stay glued to the ground and never move in a vertical direction. What I heard is we were in favor of jumping to avoid obstacles like rocks and fences but concerned about actiony jumping in combat and possible platformer elements that didn’t seem to fit our definition of a Final Fantasy game.
  
  I might need to give that episode another listen and see just what we might have said that was so ‘fucking awful’.
Finality

First off, just wanted to say I recently started listening to you guys and have really been enjoying the show. Not enough people out there putting out stuff for FFXIV :).

I wanted to comment on the “jumping issue”. I think you guys are WAY over thinking it. From my experience with hot-key type mmo’s like WoW, jumping really serves no purpose at all other than being able to jump around terrain. SWTOR did try to go a bit further in adding some platforming with gathering the datacrons but it wasn’t required.

Bringing up Tera is totally going in the wrong direction with this discussion. FFXIV is not an action MMO nor do I see them trying to make the change to one. It would require a very drastic change from the way FFXIV is played right now which would only alienate the current player base, which would be a very dumb thing to do.

Mountain out of a molehill guys. :)

  Well normally we’d agree with you, but they really did give “in combat” as an example of where they could take jumping depending on feedback. I certainly hope they wouldn’t go in that direction. And to be honest, this late in the game, I doubt they could. But it was a part of the question they asked so I think that’s why we considered it seriously in our discussion.

    Also, part of why I got so heated up about it is from reading the forums and all the crazy hate from both extreme ends of the spectrum.
    
    It’s not like I just started foaming at the mouth when they said they were going to implement jump… It would probably take some pretty extreme jumping action to make me cancel my subscription. I’ve played and enjoyed action rpgs before, I just don’t care for it in Final Fantasy.
    
    They will probably implement jumping in a way I find acceptable or probably even enjoyable. I will have to wait and see but I think it is fine to be apprehensive about it,
    
    Anyway, it was a discussion that featured different peoples opinions and its fine to disagree. I was actually pretty shocked that we all basically came down on the same side of the issue. There is a reason I wanted the other hosts to say their opinions before I commented.

  There are times we over think things; I will agree to this, but its because we try to flesh things out and really see as many sides to an argument as possible. I believe I have even admitted to thinking too much on a subject in previous episodes, because I *really* want to make sure everything is covered.
